Films of High Adventure, Volume 17: Rankin/Bass Double Feature at Fantasy

A day late and far more than a dollar short, here I am reminding you that this week's Films of High Adventure column is live over at Fantasy Magazine. We take on the animated versions of The Hobbit and The Return of the King. There's nothing more to this post, but remember that small can be beautiful. Let the paining begin!

I taught _The Hobbit_ to high school sophomores at Navajo Preparatory School in Farmington, NM from 1994-99 (along with other examples of the "Hero's Journey", including _The Odyssey_, _L'Inferno_, the Navajo Hero Twins Story, _A Midsummer Night's Dream_, and Stephen King's _Misery_. My students generally enjoyed _The Hobbit_ pretty well. After we were done with the novel, I would show the Rankin/Bass cartoon. We always got a big kick out of how no characters died on screen; instead, they would spiral away as if being flushed down an immense, screenwide commode. Watch for the spiral...

Man, that sounds like it would be a great reading list for high schoolers! And LOLZ at the spiral of DOOOOOOM--Molly and I both got a chuckle out of that as well!
