Beneath Ceaseless Skies
is a pretty goddamn cool name for a magazine. Today they're running my story "The Adventures of Ernst, Who Began a Man, Became a Cyclops, and Finished a Hero," which is, I think, my first second world fantasy story. Well, that I've published, I mean. Gone are the meticulously researched period costumes and food stuffs, banished are the era-appropriate social codes and mores, conspicuously absent are the religious and political conflicts of the day, and in their place is Motherfucking adventure with a capital motherfucking and an italicized adventure. So you know shit just got real.
Huge thanks to Scott and everybody at BCS for taking the piece and working with me to tighten it up a bit, and another round of huzzahs for Molly, Marc, and Orrin, for helping it along in its awkward growth cycle. Also many thanks to Daniel, David, Stephanie, Luke, Tracy, Travis, Jonathan, Don, Sean, and the rest of my old skool RPG crew, the memories of our days of dice and cloves providing much of the inspiration for this piece. Thanks again, everyone!
Hey, I take my payment in United States legal tender, not props in a blog post! This, you already knew about me. Kidding, of course. Loved the story and the shout-outs peppered within. Sent it to my handy-dandy iphone, to be forever nestled between Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and Siddhartha, adjacent to The Jungle.
