The Enterprise of Death Advance Reading Copy Contest

Right, so last week I mentioned that free e-book copies of The Enterprise of Death are available for review purposes on www.netgalley.com. Seeing as not everyone is fond of e-books, and seeing as I have a few bound galleys courtesy of Orbit, I thought the best plan would be to give them away here. For The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart I held an art contest here, but considering that is perhaps discriminatory toward those who are not artistically inclined, I've decided to go a different route with this book--I'll still hold an art contest, as I love being exposed to new artists and works, but it'll be a very different sort of beast.

The contest is this: find a piece of art that you think best fits The Enterprise of Death, based on the title and what little you might have gleaned about it here, and post a link to said artwork in the comments. That's right--any piece of art, any medium, any era, so long as you're able to link to it on the interwebz. Or upload it and post it in the comments, whatevs, just be sure that you can credit the artist in the comment, assuming the identity is known. Doing original work is always welcome and appreciated, but it can be as simple as linking me to your favorite Danse Macabre piece or ghoulish comic art. Only one submission per person, please, and again, be sure to credit the artist.

The only other caveat I would apply is that if you receive one of the galleys you be so kind as to review the book--on Amazon, Goodreads, Powell's, your blog, wherever; since these ARCs are expressly for review purposes some kind of review would be very, very appreciated...even if you hate the bloody thing and feel compelled to bash it, really!

Deadline: Monday, January 31st, so one week from tomorrow. As in, all links submitted up until midnight mountain time on Monday the 31st will be considered, but at 12:01 Tuesday the contest will close and on Tuesday afternoon I'll announce the winners. There will be three of them, as well as two runner-ups who will receive a top secret prize to be named later--I'll foot the shipping to anywhere in the world. Any help in spreading the word about this would be appreciated, and, most importantly, I hope it's fun. Cheers!

If you choose me to recieve a copy, I promise to send it to William Gibson after reading, and that I will write reviews daily for a week upon completion.

As far as the cover art is concerned, I think a Pushead original wouldn't be too far out of the question...

I would love a copy, and would definitely review it.

My entry is by Erzebet YellowBoy and is based purely on the title, which could mean a great deal of things to me.

I wanna read your book. This is my entry, and you can't stop me!

Woh, that was just meant to be a link, not a scary lady messing up your page widths! Sorry! Did I mention that I love the ferrets running around your page?

I'm gonna go with this one: Necromancer_by_xiwik.jpg

Mourning Goats on Jan. 25, 2011 at 8:21 AM

I really just wanted to submit a picture because it sounded like fun.

And while I will gladly review the book for The Voyager (which I planned to do anyway once it was released), if the painting I chose did make it to the finals, I will also gladly let anyone with a larger readership than The Voyager have the copy (the print version only has a circulation of about 5,000 and the website only gets a couple thousand views a week).

I've pre-ordered it anyway, and don't mind waiting.

Anyhow, while I'm sure there are many great artists who would fit nicely, and people have already submitted some nice ones, I immediately thought of German artist Michael Hutter.

It was a touch choice among Hutter's stuff, but I think I'll go with a 2006 painting called "Der Wäger von Kopf und Herz (The Weigher of Head and Heart)."

Cool idea for a contest, Jesse. Good luck to everyone

Hello Jesse/everybody,
here is my go... The art is by Alfred Rethel, a German artist of the first half of the 19th century.

Should link to Francis Bacon's 'Figure With Meat' - the artist that the title and JB's style best evokes for me

Here's my picture. It's by me (after Quentin Massys).

Er, or is that Quinten? Or Matsys? Or Matsijs? You know--that guy.

Nice detail from Bernt Notke's "Danse Macabre"...the darker, seated skeleton even suggests a slave-/washer-woman.

(fwiw, I review books quite regularly for American Book Review and Jacket.) Best of luck to you, Jesse, and the other fans.

Link above doesn't seem to work! Here's a larger version of the image I had in mind. (Crop out the vicar on the left and pope on the right...)

Something random I picked up... :3 I don't know if it is relevant enough, though I've read descriptions of your upcoming tale quite a few times.

I don't have to leave a credit, do I? T-T http://theinnocentdevil.deviantart.com/

Looking good, all! C, is that one of yours? And Mourning Goats, what about yours? Deadline's tonight, and I'll announce the winners tomorrow--cheers!

Karlyn Atkinson Berg's contribution to 'A Book About Death' last year.
'Ghosts of Ma'iingan'

The artist's own "despair" at the destruction of natural predators was an interesting twist, I think.

I have no huge reader following to offer you, just my own viewpoint in the places we ordinary folks usually hang out on the interweb.

Best of luck to you for the book release - wish me the same as I set out on a road new to me.

I suppose I broke the rules? I just wanted to make something. :3 Cast me out, it's OK!
