The Enterprise of Death Advance Reading Copy Contest RESULTS
So the clock has run down and the jig is now up--as promised, below are the winners and runners-up for the Enterprise of Death Contest that began a little over a week ago. I honestly liked all of the entries so this was tougher than I anticipated--I wish I had more galleys to give away, but alas, I have but three. I will, however, give-away five runner-up prizes instead of two, because, as should be painfully obvious by my writing, I am the world's biggest sweetheart. Said runners-up will each receive a copy of the Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart audio book, should they desire it, read with much gusto by Christopher Lane.
And if you didn't win a copy of the galley, keep in mind that e-book editions are readily available through www.netgalley.com--you'll have to sign up and request it from Orbit, but the process is free and easy, just make sure to tell Orbit where you'll be reviewing it, even if it's just your own blog. Without further ado, then, here they are, and again, I really wish I could send copies to everyone, as there wasn't a single entry that I didn't appreciate on some level--some made me swoon with appreciation, others made me giggle.
The Runners-Up:
1. C. Marchlewski's rendering of our humble protagonist--an incredibly cool and nuanced illustration:
2. W. Paul Smith's entry was Michael Hutter's beautiful "Der Wäger von Kopf und Herz (The Weigher of Head and Heart)": http://www.octopusartis.com/img/galerien/malerei/lemuria2/waegeroelgross.jpg
3. Something about Beth Stewart's entry, the collage "Ghosts of Ma'iingan" by Karlyn Atkinson Berg, really appeals to me: http://abookaboutdeath-fluxmuseum.blogspot.com/2010/09/2010abad060.html
4. Joseph's entry, by Alfred Rethel, is rather tremendous: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_kyxnd1HYfA1qa4s0qo1_500.jpg
5. And last but not least, Mourning Goat's entry of a piece titled Necromancer by, I believe, Xiwick (correct me if I'm wrong!)--early on I knew I wanted at least one piece with active necromancy going on in it, and this right here fits the bill nicely: http://fc00.deviantart.com/fs45/i/2009/061/2/7/Necromancer_by_xiwik.jpg
The Winners:
1. Being a fan of Monsieur Pushead, this entry by Leon buttered the biscuit quite nicely: http://28.media.tumblr.com/cl2cHFl9Lpgpev1jZdZOYJf3o1_400.png0
2. Nick submitted Francis Bacon's "Figure with Meat," which, given that the piece is a grotesque subversion of earlier artistic styles and masters, and the subject is a parody of a Pope, makes this rather apropos. Plus, it's the punchline of the museum scene in Batman, which doesn't hurt: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/02/Figure_with_Meat_Bacon.jpg/300px-Figure_with_Meat_Bacon.jpg
3. And, finally, Caleb Wilson's illustration of Dr. Paracelsus, which makes me all kinds of happy, as he perfectly captures the good doctor as I imagine him:
Thanks again to everyone for participating--I really do wish I had more galleys and audio books to give away. However, when I get actual copies of the finished book I'll be holding another giveaway on the site, so be sure to check in from time to time. Thanks again, and give yourselves a hearty huzzah!
omg - w00t!
Awesome!
